INDIAN KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM

1. What is meant by indian knowledge system in IKS?

👉 Ans. The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) refers to the vast and rich collection of knowledge that has developed in the Indian subcontinent over thousands of years.

It includes literature, art, philosophy, science, mathematics, medicine, social practices, and cultural traditions that reflect the wisdom of Indian civilization.

The word “Indian” in IKS refers not only to the modern nation of India but to the entire Indian subcontinent, known in ancient times as Akhanda Bharata.

The word “Knowledge” in IKS includes both written and oral traditions. In ancient India, knowledge was often passed down through oral learning, from teacher (guru) to student (shishya).

The word “System” in IKS means that this body of knowledge is well organized and follows a structured pattern.

Conclusion; IKS teaches us how to live in harmony with nature, society, and ourselves. Studying and preserving this ancient knowledge helps modern generations rediscover sustainable ways of living and appreciate the depth of India’s cultural and intellectual heritage.

2. Explain the role of Vedas in IKS.

👉 Ans. The Vedas are the absolute foundation, root, and ultimate source of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS).

The Vedas are divided into four main texts, each contributing a specific type of knowledge to the IKS framework:

Rigveda: The oldest text, focusing on hymns, cosmic order (Rita), and prayers celebrating the forces of nature.

Samaveda: The Veda of melodies and chants, which forms the foundational root of Indian classical music, rhythm, and aesthetics

Yajurveda: The Veda of rituals and liturgy, detailing the mechanics of Yajnas (sacrifices) and offering early insights into geometry and performance.

Atharvaveda: The Veda of daily life procedures, containing formulas, spells, early medical treatments, and socio-economic guidelines.
