The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) refers to the vast and rich collection of knowledge that has developed in the Indian subcontinent over thousands of years.  It includes literature, art, philosophy, science, mathematics, medicine, social practices, and cultural traditions that reflect the wisdom of Indian civilization. The word “Indian” in IKS refers not only to the modern nation of India but to the entire Indian subcontinent, known in ancient times as Akhanda Bharata. The word “Knowledge” in IKS includes both written and oral traditions. In ancient India, knowledge was often passed down through oral learning, from teacher (guru) to student (shishya).
